I am sure that everyone has a craze in car driving, likewise, in United States you can find many car crazy people. Driving is the most popular means of transportation compared to others because it is not really considered as an option when it comes to going outing to some new places which were spread out in long distances and for this, car is the most logical choice. Most cities in the United States do not have a great deal in the way of public transportation, but with the exception of larger places like New York, Chicago, Boston, and San Francisco, most cities and towns are designed with cars rather than pedestrians in mind. At the same time, it is impossible to get around in without a car, and people rarely walk any beyond than from their doors to their cars and back again.
Generally speaking, American cities are found to be flat and square, with San Franciso being a notable exception. The city planners took the basic grid designed that was used when laying out the majority cities and just laid it on the areas many steep hills rather than building around them. Though, it is pretty hard to get lost in an American town because of this grid, streets and avenues cross each other and form blocks. This is the basic unit into which cities are broken down, and people use blocks when giving directions or talking about a particular place.

Public Transportation

In other cities, public transportation consists primarily of buses, which operates only on limited routes or on an infrequent schedule. At the initial stage of the 20th century, public transportation has been very much a part of American lifestyle, but however, the structure of the American cities started changing in after World War II. Due to the growth of suburbs and the spread of business development to outer areas combined with increased automobile ownership, the existence of public transportation has become gradually decreased and this has become finally disappeared. At present, in most American cities you can see only limited bus services. But in large compactly populated cities such as New York, Atlanta, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and Washington, these are found to be exceptional. Generally, these cities have networks of buses, rail rapid transit, as well as commuter railroad connections serving extended metropolitan areas.
In American English, subway is a word, which always refers to a network of rapid transit trains that run underground and underpass is a word used for a road that runs under another road, but these are usually for cars to drive on, rather than for pedestrians. The term “exit” is used to show the way out of a station or other public place, somewhat than the more literal “way out,” which Americans generally think is funny when they encounter it in Britain and it also sounds too much like 1960s hippie slang.
Taxis

Generally in United States, the people seem to go outing only with their own automobile and enjoy with their family members. But in case of absent automobile, they use to call for taxis or cabs, which will make their traveling trip easier. Actually, these taxis or cabs do travel the streets in downtown areas of large cities looking for customers, if there is any need of it. But to be fact, you will notice that in most cities there are very few taxis than you would expect. In some towns and cities, you need to go with on-call service for taxis and you must call ahead and order a taxi rather than trying to find one on the street.
In fact, the car services usually provide nice cars but the cost of the ride is found to be quite heavier compared to taxis. The advantage of this service is that, here your fare is fixed ahead of time, so that you know the cost of your ride before you get into the car and there won’t be any cheating. But it is always better to ask for the fare before ordering the car through phone call. But in taxi, the fare is based on meters, so that you need to pay the amount according to the distance calculation. Actually, this is found to have both advantage and disadvantage, Yes! When you go for a short distance, you need to pay only fewer amounts, but when you are locked by heavy traffic and unable to move to that short distance place, then you need to pay more amount than expected.

Train Travel

The United States has one of the largest railroad networks in the world and it is used for goods and the number of passengers carried on these railroads is found to be very low. Because the distance is quite longer, train travel has been replaced as air travel by most of the people. Why to travel for more than 3 days, instead of reaching that place within 6 hours? But, however, trains provide a contented and leisurely way to see the country for passengers who have a lot of time or for those who hate flying. Actually, these long-distance railroads are operated by Amtrak, which is a company formed in the early 1970s to take over and run all the dying railroad companies across the country.
Tickets for all types of transportation are known as one way for single tickets and round trip for return tickets and the cheapest tickets on trains are known as coach. There are certain rules before get into train like the train tickets should be bought before traveling. On long distance trips, you cannot get on the train at all without a ticket and on commuter trips, you usually have to pay a more fare, if you forgot to book it before and you need to buy the ticket from the conductor on board the train. Arriving and departing trains are announced only with the track number instead of platform number. The compartments on a train that passengers travel in are called as coaches for long trips.

Bus Transportation

Of many transportation methods, bus is found to be the cheapest method of transportation compared to many other methods in United States. Actually, it is the one, which moves to most extensive system of routes by taking people from the largest of cities to all smallest and remotest towns in the country. By traveling in bus, you got a better chance to meet different kind of people and share your feeling with them and vice versa and make your trip exciting and interesting. Since trips are found to be quite longer period of time, you need to share more interesting things with them in the bus. So, be ready to hear some new real stories, which you have ever seen before.
The largest American bus operated is said to be greyhound lines, which serve all major cities and towns. The other short distance places or to smaller towns is usually provided by local and regional bus services. Americans also ride bike, but this is mostly for their exercise or for fun activities. Actually, getting around a city through bike can be a dangerous one, because most cities do not have special lanes for bike riding and if they do, this may end suddenly when a street gets too narrow for that extra lane. Likewise, the bicyclists who ride on streets are expected to follow all the traffic laws, but many people ignore these rules.

Americans usually refer to luggage as baggage, and the place where you buy your tickets is a ticket counter. The best way of covering long distances in the United States is to travel through airlines. Actually there are so many airlines such as national and regional, which flies on different locations and are economical too. Generally, business people seem to fly all over the country, and for them it is not uncommon to travel between cities by plane. So for those passengers, the airlines use frequent flyer programs and they use to reward them by providing special cards at discount rates. Some airlines functions on a no-frills basis, offering the lowest fares, but slightly less comfortable planes and little more than peanuts and pretzels to eat for them. Most airlines serve free soft drinks, but not all alcoholic beverages.
Generally, airlines regularly use to overbook domestic flights, so it is important to check in on time to avoid being bumped off a flight. But, however, they do offer compensation in the form of cash or free flights to passengers who unpaid helper to give up their seats on overbooked flights. In case of international flights, prices to and from the United States are extremely competitive and the consolidators or agencies that sell international airline tickets at huge discounts offer the cheapest flights. Sometimes that might come as a surprise to people who use to travel internationally.
